BCTC Equine Farm Skills and Training Program
for transitioning veterans and the National Guard
If you’re a veteran or a spouse transitioning from Active Duty, a rehab program, or a Second Chance program, finding a job can be a priority. For those in the Bluegrass area, there are numerous opportunities in Kentucky’s equine industry. There are over 60,000 equine-related jobs in Kentucky that are part of a $6.1 billion industry that includes 30,000 horse farms and world-famous breeding and horse racing. But, transitioning into the equine field requires, among other things, knowledge and experience.
The Secretariat Center offers the BCTC Veteran Equine Internship, a three-week program designed to help participants gain practical skills relevant to various roles within the horse industry. Throughout the internship, students will learn essential skills including; grooming, feeding, and health management techniques for horses. There will also be a focus on working with off-track Thoroughbreds, along with insights into equine physiology, nutrition, and common health issues faced by racehorses.
An important aspect of the program includes job and career experiences, where interns will visit various locations around the Bluegrass region to explore the types of careers available in the industry. This hands-on approach helps participants gain a clearer understanding of potential career paths.
Thanks to our partnership with Bluegrass Community and Technical College, participants can enhance their career prospects after the internship. BCTC offers the opportunity to pursue a two-year degree in Equine Science from BCTC, along with various certificate programs.
